Little about Me and the Area I Am From
I grew up in Northern Michigan in a small community of about
15,000 people called Gaylord, also known as The Alpine Village. This
community is also called the Golf Mecca of the Midwest because within a short drive
of the town there are twenty-one golf courses. Just a short drive
outside the city limits is a spring fed lake called Otsego Lake which is one and half
miles long and a half mile wide. This lake is also the starting point for
the Ausable River which at the end of its mouth, where it feeds into Lake Huron,
is over a half mile wide. The other natural resource I grew up by is Hardwick Pines National Forest and State Park which is one of the few remaining
forests to never have been forested east of the Mississippi River. Located below
are some images of the afore mentioned locations.
Additionally, I grew up one hour from Traverse City, Mackinaw
Island, Lake Michigan, The Sleeping Bear Dunes, Lake Huron, and the Mackinaw
Bridge (world’s second largest suspension bridge). I also grew up
less than two hours from Lake Superior, Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and one of the oldest cities in the United States which located on the Canadian
Border, and the Soo Locks (the third busiest lock system in the
world). Many of these places are visited by thousands of tourists every
year, and as a child I visited them many, many times. Located below this
paragraph I have posted some images of these sites as well.
During the school year I try to present interesting facts about Michigan, other places in the United States, and my family
to help the student learn about the experiences of the person teaching them
each day. My family also sends images from the various seasons in Michigan
to show my students. This also allows for conversations about different parts of
the country, and it also helps the students to see the majesty of our great nation.
